(DOESN"T NEED TO BE DESSERT RELATED)

I had buns in my oven, lots of buns.  I made hotdog buns.  They were awesome.  I made them for chilidogs this afternoon and I made a few of the buns bigger so tomorrow we can have meatball subs.  I love homemade buns.  They beat store bought hands down.  And they are soooo easy.  They really don't take that much time to make.  The longest part is waiting for them rise.  While I'm waiting I find about a million other things I need to do, so the time passs quickly and they are so worth it.

Homemade Hamburger Buns

Ingredients

1 cup milk

1/2 cup water

1/4 cup butter

4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 (.25 ounce) package instant yeast

2 tablespoons white sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 egg

Directions

In a small saucepan, heat milk, water and butter until very warm, 115 degrees F (50 degrees C).  No warmer or the yeast will die, and not rise.  In a large bowl, mix together 1 3/4 cup flour, yeast, sugar and salt. Mix milk mixture into flour mixture, and then mix in egg. Mix in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead until smooth and elastic, or attach dough hook to mixer and let mixer knead it about 5 minutes.

Transfer dough into greased bowl, turning once to coat the dough.  Let rest in warm place until doubles in size, 1-2 hours.  Once doubled, punch down, and transfer to a lightly floured surface.

Shape each piece into a 6x4 inch rectangle. Starting with the longer side, roll up tightly and set on baking sheet, seam side down.  Let rise about 25 to 30 minutes.

Bake at 350 degrees F (200 degrees C) for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
